The Russian entered the ATP 500 tournament as the defending champion and opened with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Arthur Fis. He then defeated Grigor Dimitrov to reach the quarterfinals.
Medvedev beat eighth seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to set up a semifinal meeting with fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Russian made the only break of the first set, winning it with a score of 6-4 and thus taking the advantage. In the second set, both players showed very strong serves and a tie-break was played. Medvedev won 6-4, 7-6 (6) and reached the final in Vienna.
Sinner opened the Erste Bank Open with a 7-6(2), 7-5 victory over Ben Shelton, avenging his loss to the American in Shanghai. The Italian then faced compatriot Lorenzo Sonego, beating him 6-2, 6-4 to secure his place in the quarter-finals.
Here he scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over seventh seed Francis Tiafoe and set up a semifinal meeting with third seed Andrey Rublev. Sinner trailed 2-5 in the first set, but fought back to win 7-5 and take the lead. The second set was just as tense and ended in a tie-break. Sinner won 7-5, 7-6 to reach his sixth final of the 2023 season.
In the personal confrontation between them, Medvedev leads with a score of 6:1. Their last meeting took place in the final of the China Open, where the Italian won 7-6(2), 7-6(2) to win the ATP 500 tournament.
