Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic beat the Norwegian Holger Rune during the group round match of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) final tournament.
The match ended with a score of 7:6 (7:4), 6:7 (1:7), 6:3 in favor of the Serb. The tennis players spent 3 hours and 4 minutes on the court.
With this victory, Djokovic secured the number one title at the end of the year for a record eighth time. The last time the Serbian finished the season as leader of the ranking was in 2021, when he surpassed the feat of American Pete Sampras, who finished the year in first place at six times.
Additionally, Djokovic updated his own record, becoming the oldest tennis player to finish the year in first place in the world rankings. Two years ago, the Serbian finished the season in first place at the age of 34, at the end of the current season he will be 36 years old.
Djokovic and Rune are part of the green group for the final tournament. In the next match, Djokovic will meet Italian Jannik Sinner, Rune will play a match with Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. The meetings will take place on November 14.
The ATP Finals 2023 tournament will take place in Turin from November 12 to 19. The winner could win more than $4.8 million. Last year, Djokovic became the tournament champion.
