Medvedev had an incredible season, winning five titles. And in statistics he is 64-16. However, he comes into this match having lost in the first round of the Paris Masters two weeks ago to eventual finalist Grigor Dimtirov.
However, the 27-year-old has become a force to be reckoned with on hard courts in 2023, winning titles in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami. He also reached the finals at Indian Wells (lost to Carlos Alcaraz), US Open (lost to Novak Djokovic), Beijing and Vienna (both lost to Jannik Sinner).
The 2020 champion is 9-7 in ATP finals but has lost his last four matches. These include last year’s three decisive tiebreakers and the 2021 final, where Medvedev lost to Alexander Zverev.
Interestingly, in his first match in 2019, Medvedev also lost all three matches.
Meanwhile, Rublev also had a good season, going 56-23 and winning two titles. The 26-year-old tennis player was beaten by future champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals in Paris a week ago.
Rublev won two titles in 2023 on clay in Monte Carlo and Bastad. He played in four finals, including two (Dubai and Shanghai) on hard court. He also reached the quarterfinals of three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, with the exception of Roland Garros.
The Russian won one match each in his first two appearances at the ATP Finals in 2020 and 2021 and reached the semi-finals last season. His tournament stats are 4-6.
Medvedev has won six of eight meetings against Rublev (all on hard court), including both this year, giving him a 6-2 head-to-head advantage. Their last meeting was in the quarterfinals of the US Open, which Medvedev won in straight sets.
Predictions for the match between Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev
Both Medvedev and Rublev are typical baseline players and have similar playing styles: strong serves, powerful backhands and forehands, and good movement.
However, Medvedev is a better defensive player and also has a slight advantage due to his superior experience and consistency, especially on hard courts. Medvedev is 263-88 on hard court with 18 titles, while Rublev is 206-113 with nine titles.
Medvedev may have lost his last four ATP Finals matches, but he has dominated Rublev in recent meetings and should win this match.
Forecast: Daniil Medvedev will win in three sets.
