Late in the evening of Monday, November 13, at the ATP Finals tournament, which takes place in Turin, Italy, two Russians will start – Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. Exactly a year ago, Daniil and Andrey already faced each other in the group stage, then Rublev won in a dramatic match – 6:7, 6:3, 7:6.
If we continue the topic of personal meetings, Medvedev is in the lead with a score of 6:2. In addition to the already mentioned match, Daniil lost to Andrey in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters of the 2021 season. Then Rublev also needed three sets to beat Medvedev – 2:6, 6:3, 6:3 . And before that, Daniil won four matches in a row and Andrei could not win a single set in these matches.
The last two face-to-face meetings between Russians also went to Medvedev. They have already passed during the current season. In the last match of the tournament in Dubai, Daniil literally crushed his compatriot – 6:2, 6:2. And in the quarterfinals of the US Open, Rublev managed to indicate the fight, but still lost to Medvedev, without taking a single set – 4:6, 3:6, 4:6. Let’s note a very interesting detail: in all the confrontations between our tennis players, the first set went to Daniil.
As for the performance of the Russians in the final tournament, there are some peculiarities here too. For example, for Medvedev, it will be the fifth participation, for Rublev, the fourth. Daniil became the winner of the final in 2020 and also reached the final match of the tournament a year later, but lost the title to German Alexander Zverev. Andrey left the group only once, a year ago, but in the semifinals he lost to Norwegian Kasper Ruud. Rublev is therefore a little more hungry for victories, since he has never won tournaments of such a high level. But that doesn’t mean Medvedev won’t be motivated. There will be some, and many more.
Our two tennis players had a good season. Daniil has won five titles, including the Miami and Rome Masters. Andrey won two tournaments, winning the title at the Masters (Monte Carlo) for the first time in his career. Both entered the final tournament in good form and are capable of competing for at least a semi-final spot.
