The project, which aims to build 38 fields and a stadium for 8,000 spectators, received an initial rejection from Wandsworth town council.
The expansion of Wimbledonwhich aims to develop 38 fields and a stadium with eight thousand spectators of capacity, received the first rejection this Tuesday, after the Wandsworth council recommended that the proposal not go ahead.
The All England Club, which organized the third Grand Slam of the year, took over the land adjacent to the club, Wimbledon Park, which until now is a golf course and a public park, increasing neighbors complainwho fear that the construction of farms will destroy the green area and endanger the flora and fauna.
Merton town council, one of the neighborhoods where the tournament is located, gave the green light to the expansion days ago, but Wandsworth town council, which also has jurisdiction over the area, recommended stopping the this proposal.
“We are surprised that Wandsworth Council has recommended refusal of the Wimbledon Park project, especially after Merton approved the application after extensive review. “We are disappointed that Wandsworth has taken a different view.”Wimbledon said in a statement. Members of Wandsworth council will vote on November 21 whether to go ahead with the project.
If approved, the City of London Council will have the final say on this expansion, which aims to allow Wimbledon to stage the qualification stage at the same venue and not in Roehampton, a few kilometers from the club.
