Chesnokov says Wimbledon’s decision not to invite Sharapova to center court’s 100th anniversary makes matters worse

Roland Garros semi-finalist Andrei Chesnokov believes Wimbledon organizers’ decision not to invite Maria Sharapova celebrating the 100th anniversary of Center Court is not constructive and only exacerbates the situation.

Wimbledon officials deny that Sharapova’s absence from the celebration was due to her Russian nationality.

– The Wimbledon organizers are only making the situation worse with their actions. And I would understand them if it would help in any way. Sharapova does not live in Russia at all. Maybe he doesn’t even know what’s going on in Ukraine. She may not be up to it. After all, there are people who do not follow events.

Politicians should be responsible, not me or Masha Sharapova. What is the fault of the children who are also suspended from Wimbledon? We were told that they would impose sanctions, but ordinary people would not suffer. But in the end it turned out the opposite, – said Chesnokov RT.

Chesnokov also commented on Wimbledon organizers’ decision to ban Russians and Belarusians from the tournament in 2022.

– Wimbledon’s problem is not that they wanted to eliminate all Russians and Belarusians. He comes from the royal family. For some reason they think it will give a positive response,” he pointed out.
