Daniel Medvedev surpassed the feat of Olympic champion Evgeniy Kafelnikov by the number of victories of Russians over players of the top ten in the ranking of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for the calendar year, reports OptaAce.
On Wednesday, the 27-year-old defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a group stage match of the ATP Finals tournament. The victory was his 12th against a top 10 tennis player in 2023. Medvedev updated the record of Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who had 11 such victories in 1994.
With this victory, Medvedev qualified early for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals tournament; in the final round he will meet Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
The ATP tournament final will take place in Turin from November 12 to 19. The winner will win more than $4.8 million. Last year, Serbian Novak Djokovic became the tournament champion.
