“A success for those who like headlines. Tennis players themselves don’t pay attention to it.” – Selivanenko on Medvedev’s record

The vice-president of the Russian Tennis Federation (RFF), Alexei Selivanenko, told that much importance should not be attached to the record. Daniel Medvedev by the number of victories of Russian tennis players over players of the top ten in the ranking of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for the calendar year.

On Wednesday, Medvedev defeated German Alexander Zverev in the group stage match of the last ATP tournament in Turin. This victory was his 12th against a tennis player from the top 10 of the 2023 world rankings. Medvedev updated the file Evgenia Kafelnikova who scored 11 similar victories in 1994.

— Daniil played with more confidence in the match against Zverev. During the first set the game was more even, but then Medvedev managed to add and get the desired result. A confident, serene and drama-free victory.

“It was Medvedev’s 12th victory against top-10 opponents of the year. Beat Kafelnikov’s record of 11. How exceptional is this feat?

“It’s a win for those who like headlines.” There are many elements in tennis by which records can be counted: aces, hits by the right-hander, by the left-hander, how many victories over left-handers, over right-handers. This is a great achievement, but, in my opinion, it is not something that tennis players themselves pay attention to. The result is good, but there is no point throwing loud terms here. This is not what players’ careers are made of,” Selivanenko told .

Thanks to his victory over Zverev, Medvedev qualified earlier than expected for the semi-finals of the last ATP tournament; in the last round of the group stage, he will meet Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

The ATP tournament final will take place in Turin from November 12 to 19. The winner will win more than $4.8 million. Last year, Serbian Novak Djokovic became the tournament champion.
