Alcaraz’s ATP Finals debut began with a three-set loss to Alexander Zverev. His next match against Andrei Rublev was crucial for both players, with each needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The two were tied for most of the first set, but Alcaraz eventually gained the upper hand. He won the final three games of the set to claim victory. The Spaniard confirmed his dominance in the second set, breaking Rublev’s serve twice to win the match 7-5, 6-2.
Medvedev started the tournament by defeating Rublev in straight sets and faced Zverev in the second match. Former world number one Medvedev started the match with a break, but lost his advantage.
In the ensuing tiebreak, Zverev led 4:1 and even had a few set points, but Medvedev turned things around by taking the first set. The Russian saved a break point and made it 5-4 in the second set. He then broke the German’s serve in the next game for a 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory.
Before that, Alcaraz and Medvedev met four times and in personal meetings the score was 2-2. Medvedev won his last match at the 2023 US Open in four sets.
