A major scandal is brewing in Ukrainian tennis
Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremskaya commented on the letter of her colleagues directed against the vice-president of the Tennis Federation of Ukraine Evgeny Zukina.
Yastremskaya stressed that Zukin is a “decent, honest professional.” Dayana condemned the statement, urging tennis players to dialogue.
“I strongly condemn such actions, which are absolutely not constructive and cause significant harm nationally in the eyes of international organizations.”
“I know Yevgeny well, first of all, as a professional in his field, an honest and decent person. He always adheres to the fulfillment of his obligations, is ready to help if one of us gets into a difficult situation. By the way, some of the signatories of this letter are well aware of all this from their own experience.
“In addition, I note that I personally think that such things should be decided between the direct participants in possible conflicts, and not be taken out into the public space. There were some claims – contact Zukin or FTU President Sergey Lagur! Why did you decide that they would not communicate with you? All these people are open to dialogue.”
“I reiterate my condemnation of such actions in principle, and in the current situation, when we must all unite, even more so!”
Ukrainian tennis players demand that Zukin be fired from his positions in the Ukrainian Tennis Federation, the ITF Davis Cup committee, the ITF referee position and the deprivation of any powers in the International Tennis Federation.
The letter against Zukin was signed by Lyudmila Kichenok, Nadezhda Kichenok, Marta Kostyuk, Ilya Marchenko, Sergei Stakhovsky, Elina Svitolina and Lesya Tsurenko.
Today Katarina Zawatskaya, who was among the signatories, withdrew her signature. The 22-year-old athlete did not name the reason for this decision.
Recall that Zukin, summing up the match between the Ukrainian team and the United States (2:3) in the Billie Jean King Cup, spoke negatively about some Ukrainian tennis players, who, in his opinion, refused to participate in the duel with the Americans.
The functionary said that he “hopes that Ukrainian tennis players will change their attitude towards playing for the national team and will be patriots not only on Instagram.”
