Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina named among the contenders for the award “Comeback of the Year” (Comeback Player of the Year) as part of the annual award WTA Player Awards 2023.

Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) spent 12 months away from tennis to give birth to daughter Sky in October 2022, and also used her maternity leave to raise funds for her home country. Against the backdrop of new motherhood and the ongoing war, Svitolina returned to tour in April 2023. A month later, she enjoyed on-court success, winning her 17th career title in Strasbourg before reaching the quarter-finals of Roland Garros and a third major semi-final at Wimbledon. In two months, Svitolina won 13 of 16 matches, including defeating world number one Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, and rose 481 places in the rankings from 508th to 27th.
Svitolina has five competitors in this category. These are representatives of the Czech Republic Marketa Vondrousova and Karolina Muchova, Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from nowhere. All of them missed a lot of time over the past year due to injuries or health problems, but returned to the court quite successfully.
