Vice President of the Russian Tennis Federation Alexey Selivanenko expressed the opinion that Mirra Andreeva is one of the luminous discoveries of this season.
Last season, 16-year-old Andreeva reached the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon, repeating the record of Maria Sharapova, who was the only tennis player of the 21st century who managed to reach this stage of the tournament at the age 17 years old. Andreeva also reached the third round of Roland Garros. She started the season at 405th place in the world rankings, the tennis player now occupies 57th position.
— Mirra is of course one of the most striking discoveries of the finished season on the women’s circuit. His winning streak against renowned opponents shows his desire to play at the highest level. Another thing is that the transition from junior to adult tennis involves many nuances and happens differently for each athlete. A professional and experienced team works with Mirra and understands everything perfectly. Here the most important thing is not to reach a position in the ranking as quickly as possible, but to lay the foundation for a long successful career,” Selivanenko said, as quoted by RB Sport.
On Monday, Andreeva was nominated for the WTA Newcomer of the Year award.
