The Women’s Tennis Association officially disavowed the competition in the aggressor country
Journalists Reuters turned to Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for a comment on the participation of several athletes representing the organization at a tournament in the city from the aggressor country, St. Petersburg.
“This event is not affiliated with the WTA and the WTA does not support it,” was the official response.
“Players compete on the WTA Tour as independent contractors and, at their discretion, may participate in exhibition events without penalty during the off-season,” the WTA added.
Let us remind you that an unofficial tennis tournament is planned in Russian St. Petersburg, to which many athletes from civilized countries have been invited – in particular, Italy, France and Spain.
Potential participants include representatives of the top 100 ATP and WTA rankings Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain), Laszlo Diere (Serbia) and Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan).
The general sponsor of the tournament will be the Gazprom company, one of the sponsors of Russian military aggression on the territory of Ukraine.
In the early hours of February 24, 2022, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia has continued for the 643rd day.
