Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev explained why this season turned out to be the best of his career.
Rublev failed to leave the Red Group of the final phase (held from November 12 to 19), losing in two matches against his compatriot Daniil Medvedev, the German Alexander Zverev and the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. This season, the Russian won the Monte Carlo Masters and the Båstad tournament and finished the year ranked fifth in the world. In total, Rublev, 26, owns 14 titles in ATP tournaments.
– I have a second trainer – Alberto Martin, a new physio, a new fitness trainer. From the start of the season, I had the feeling of having found the position I was looking for. The victory in Monte-Carlo and the following tournaments only confirmed that I had to believe in what I was doing, don’t doubt it. It is clear that Fernando [Висенте] Everything went well regarding training, but the second coach studied sports psychology. We do a lot of things with him outside of training that specifically target his behavior on the field. Plus, he can explain in a different language the things that Fernando says to me,” Rublev said at the Championship.
In the second round of the Red Group against Alcaraz, Rublev, at the opening of the second match, after another mistake, hit himself several times with his racket on the left leg, bloodying his knee. This behavior from the Russian caused a mixed reaction in the tennis community. In particular, Australian Nick Kyrgios, involved in numerous scandals on and off the field, said that even he never allowed himself “such madness.”
