Former Russian world second racket Vera Zvonareva will perform at the Northern Palmyra Trophies tournament in St. Petersburg, the press service of the competition reports.
The reigning WTA Finals doubles champion will replace injured Italian Jasmine Paolini and strengthen the Lions team led by Svetlana Kuznetsova and Janko Tipsarevic. Also on the team are Karen Khachanov, Alexander Shevchenko, Anastasia Potapova (all from Russia), Laszlo Djere (both from Serbia) and Victoria Tomova (Bulgaria).
Nikolai Davydenko (captain), Anastasia Myskina (captain), Diana Schneider, Veronika Kudermetova (all from Russia), Adrian Mannarino (France), Dusan Lajovic (Serbia), Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan), Roberto Bautista will play for the Sphinx team Agut (Spain).
The first Northern Palmyra Trophies tournament took place last year.
Earlier, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced that it will not sanction players who will participate in the Northern Palmyra Trophy tournament in Russia.
Since February 2022, most international federations have suspended Russians from tournaments under their auspices. Russian tennis players participate in ATP and WTA competitions in neutral status.
