“The ATP and WTA demonstrate that sport goes beyond politics. This is how it should be.” Tarpishchev – about the St. Petersburg tournament

President of the Russian Tennis Federation, member of the International Olympic Committee (CIO ) Shamil Tarpishchev told that the ATP and WTA have taken a completely correct position in relation to the Northern Palmyra Trophy tournament.

On Friday it became known that the ATP will not apply sanctions to athletes who participate in the tournament in St. Petersburg. Previously, the WTA had taken a similar position. — It’s great that we are holding this tournament in St. Petersburg. I am very happy that the channel broadcasts the tournament matches, because this is the real popularization of tennis. I’m glad we’re playing at home. Thanks to the screening of this tournament, the number of people wishing to learn tennis in Russia will increase. The ATP and WTA demonstrate that sport goes beyond politics. This is how it should be, this is how it was originally planned. I think the position of the ATP and the WTA is absolutely correct. This allows us to preserve sport in the form in which we are used to seeing it. Tennis remains what a sport should be. Foreigners performing in St. Petersburg, that says a lot. Earlier, at the WTA final tournament, our Vera Zvonareva played with German Siegemund and together they became champions. Tennis is a big friendly family, we see it. No one refuses to play against ours,” Tarpishchev told .

At the Northern Palmyra Trophies tournament, the Lions team includes Svetlana Kuznetsova (captain), Karen Khachanov, Alexander Shevchenko, Anastasia Potapova, Vera Zvonareva (all from Russia), Janko Tipsarevic (captain), Laszlo Djere (both of Serbia), Victoria Tomova. (Bulgaria).
