President of the Russian Tennis Federation, member of the International Olympic Committee (CIO ) Shamil Tarpishchev told that the Russian team could win the Davis Cup multiple times if the team is allowed to participate in the tournament.
The Russian national team has won the Davis Cup three times: in 2002, 2006 and 2021. The team has reached the final of the tournament three times (1994, 1995, 2007). In mid-March 2022, the Russian team was suspended from participation in the Davis Cup.
“We would be the favorites for the Davis Cup, we could win it several times if the circumstances were favorable. It is true that we are favorites, because we have two players (Daniil Medvedev and Andrei Rublev, editor’s note) in the top five. Our team is very strong, interchangeable, the atmosphere within the team is great, because everyone has known each other since childhood. It’s a shame that we don’t play the Davis Cup. The fact that we do not compete like the Russian team is the position of the international federation. It all depends on the people. Some act according to the principle “Sport is outside politics”, others do not,” Tarpishchev told .
The ATP and WTA allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in all tournaments with neutral status, but without additional restrictions.
