On Friday it became known that the ATP and WTA will not impose sanctions on athletes participating in the tournament in St. Petersburg. Russian tennis players have been participating in ATP and WTA tournaments in neutral status since February 2022, after most international federations suspended Russians from tournaments under their auspices.
Tarpishchev stressed the importance of holding the tournament in St. Petersburg and expressed satisfaction that the Match TV channel is broadcasting his matches, seeing this as a way to popularize tennis in Russia. He emphasized that the ATP and WTA demonstrate that sport is above politics, which is consistent with the original ideas about sport.
