The Ukrainian received an invitation to replace Donna Vekic at an event in France
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk refused to participate in the final match of the tournament in the French city Bourg-de-Page against Russian Mirra Andreeva.
Marta received an offer to play at the event instead of Donna Vekic. According to the regulations, the Croatian tennis player was supposed to compete immediately in the final match; the Ukrainian was automatically nominated instead.
The second finalist was determined on Saturday – Andreeva beat ex-Russian Varvara Gracheva, who now competes under the French flag. Kostyuk refused to participate. French organizers said the final would not take place due to the “geopolitical context”.
Marta Kostyuk is ranked 39th in the new WTA rankings. The Ukrainian was included in the list of participants in the main draw of the first Grand Slam tournament of 2024 Australian Open.
