Lesya is ready to return to the national team
Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko declared her readiness to play for the national team in the Billie Jean King Cup. Tsurenko also commented on the transition of the Ukrainian women’s national team under the patronage of the Elina Svitolina Foundation.
“I knew about this decision [передаче управления женской теннисной сборной Украины в Кубке Билли Джин Кинг Фонду Элины Свитолиной] some time before the official announcement and I have a very positive attitude towards it. This is something so new and fresh for Ukrainian tennis, for the women’s team. I think this should give a significant impetus to development and we as a team will be able to achieve excellent results. I really believe in a positive future.”
“Will we now see Lesya Tsurenko in the national team? I think we’ll see. Of course, I will be very happy if I am invited to the national team next year. I will be very happy to take part and become part of the team in the matches of the Billie Jean King Cup, and in the future to play at the Olympics in Paris. Of course, we understand that there are still nuances with the Olympics, but if our team takes part in the games, then I plan to perform there.”
Tsurenko played for the Ukrainian national team from 2011 to 2020. In total, Lesya played 30 matches (24 in singles and six in doubles) for the blue-yellows.
Today, FTU announced the transfer of management of the Ukrainian women’s tennis team in the Billie Jean King Cup to the Elina Svitolina Foundation. The agreement is valid for four years, from 2024 to 2027. The formation of the strategy and preparation of the national team now directly depends on the Svitolina Foundation.
On April 12-13, 2024, a match will take place between Ukraine and Romania as part of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifications. The Blue-Yellows will be the hosts of the match.
Let us remind you that in the playoff match of the Billie Jean King Cup, which took place in the first half of November, the blue-yellows beat the Netherlands. Our national team hosted an opponent in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.
Ukraine is trying to make it to the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup for the third year in a row. In 2022, our tennis players lost to the US team, and in 2023 – to the Czech national team.
In the updated ranking of the Billie Jean King Cup, the Ukrainian national team takes 18th place.
