Predictions for the group stage
Group A:
Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz will play for the Polish national team. This is the duo’s second tournament.
Poland will compete for a place in the semi-finals with Spain, which will be played by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sara Sorribes Tormo. Sarah could become a very valuable doubles player.
Swiatek’s main challenge in singles will be Brazilian Beatrice Addad Maia, who ended the season in style by winning the WTA Elite Trophy. Thiago Monteiro, who also had a fairly successful 2023, will play alongside him. But Poland clearly appears to be the favorite, the team is balanced and the strongest.
Forecast: Poland will win the group
Group B:
In the match between Greece and Canada we will be able to witness the confrontation between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
In the women’s category, Maria Sakkari and Leila Fernandez will fight. In this match, Fernandez’s strong backhand will thwart his opponent’s stubborn defense.
Nicholas Harry and Daniela Seguel will play for the Chilean national team, but they will have to jump over their heads to force a fight.
Forecast: Canada will win the group
Group C:
The United States has perhaps the most versatile team in the tournament, with top 10 players Taylor Fritz and Jessica Pegula.
However, Fritz will face strong opposition from Alex de Minaur and Cameron Norrie. The Australian, in particular, can spring a surprise and he will play at home.
But for women, everything is simpler: Pegula should have enough strength to defeat Ayla Tomjanovich and Katie Boulter.
Forecast: USA will win the group
Group D:
Angélique Kerber returns to competition after maternity leave. The German has fond memories of her time in Australia, where she won her first Grand Slam several years ago.
Kerber will face two very different opponents: the powerful Caroline Garcia and the counter-attacker Jasmine Paolini. It might take her some time to get her game back, but she has a chance to win both matches.
His teammate Alexander Zverev, with his powerful serve and forehand, should be able to beat Adrian Manrino and Lorezno Sonego.
Forecast: Germany will win the group
Group E:
Novak Djokovic will compete in his first United Cup, where he will meet players who have made significant progress in 2023 – Jiri Leecka and Zheng Jinzen.
Both players have good serves and powerful shots from the baseline, but Djokovic is the clear favorite.
Also making her United Cup debut is reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrusova, who will be looking to get her game back after a disappointing performance in the WTA Finals. However, the talented Zheng Qingwen and Olga Danilovich will try to give him a fight. Danilovic is not the strongest tennis player, but the Djokovic factor should play a role.
Forecast: Serbia will win the group
Group F:
Donna Vekic and Borna Coric will play for the Croatian team in this year’s United Cup, but they have serious opponents.
Coric in particular will have to do his best to beat Casper Ruud, who did his best during the recently concluded World Tennis League. Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor could also cause problems.
But among the women, Vekic will be the clear favorite against Arantxa Rus and Malene Helgo.
Forecast: Croatia will win the group
