Vesnina admitted that Wozniacki inspired her to return to touring

Olympic doubles champion Elena Vesnin shared who she consulted and who inspired her when she decided to return to her career.

On Thursday, Vesnina, 37, announced the resumption of her playing career. In May 2023, the tennis player gave birth to her second daughter.

— You know, when I first came back in 2021, it was difficult because it was a pandemic, coronavirus. I was traveling then with my child, with Lisa, and I even had a certain feeling of guilt, because traveling was very difficult. Constant PCR testing and restrictions did not allow us to leave the hotel. It was only then that some relaxation began and we were able to at least go out somewhere – walk in the parks, visit some sights. At first it was very difficult with these restrictions. Now there are other difficulties, including the fact that it is more difficult to fly out of Moscow and get somewhere. Because you have to choose a route with a stop in Istanbul or Belgrade, somewhere else. Fortunately, there are flights Moscow – Doha and Moscow – Dubai. At least you can get there by direct flight. Now, I haven’t consulted any of the players, but I have always been in contact with Veronichka Kudermetova, Nastya Pavlyuchenkova and Lyuda Samsonova, with all our girls. We communicate with all of them – I follow their results, their successes, I am very happy with how they have improved. And I thought it would be beautiful to play like that with two children.

Besides, Caroline Wozniacki also inspired me. I can say it. We are also in contact with Caroline, she is intelligent. True, she first gave birth to two children, then she came back (laughs). We are athletes. It’s in our blood to be fit, to be in a good mood and positive. And I think the kids will only help us with that. Of course, it won’t be that simple. But we already know how to handle this,” Vesnina said, as quoted by the Championship.

Vesnina won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in doubles and also became a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics in mixed doubles.

The athlete gave birth to her first daughter in November 2018.
