Belarusian Tennis Federation (BTF) chief Sergei Rutenko recalled the presumption of innocence in the situation with Aslan Karatsev that the German television channel ZDF suspected of participating in match fixing.
On May 2, French newspaper L’Équipe reports that Belarusian specialist Yegor Yatsyk, who coached Karatsev until 2021, was questioned by French police in September-October 2020 in a match-fixing case. No charges have been brought against him. On July 10, the ZDF announced that Karatsev could take part in five fixed matches, including two Challenger Doubles in Kazakhstan and Finland.
— As an athlete in the past, I condemn the actions of athletes in all types of sports related to match-fixing and betting. I share the position of the authorities of all the countries of the world who are fighting against this evil. I would also like to note that Yegor Yatsyk, a former mentor of Karatsev, is not a member of the Belarusian Tennis Federation.
I don’t want to blame anyone in the situation with Karatsev. There is a presumption of innocence in the world. To date, as I have read, an investigation has been carried out by German journalists and the International Tennis Federation. If they have evidence, facts, then the situation is simple: they have to transfer everything to law enforcement, then everything is decided by the court. The procedure is known. Unfortunately, it has already been used more than once,” Rutenko told RT.
Karatsev is ranked 40th in the world rankings. The 28-year-old Russian tennis player has three titles in ATP tournaments, last year the Russian reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
