In the middle of the match for the first qualifying round in between Dominic Thiem and the Australian James McCabewhich ended in victory for the Austrian by 2-6, 7-6(4) and 6-4, a 50cm oriental brown appeared on Court 2 of the Queensland Tennis Centre. It is considered one of the most dangerous snakes in the world, just behind West Taipan, because its venom contains powerful neurotoxins that affect neurons and cause blood clotting, and other toxins that affect the heart and kidneys.
In order for the match to continue, one of the tournament workers had to come in with a trash can and a snake catcher to remove it from the venue, but both ended up near the fences where the spectators were.
