On January 2, Nadal defeated Dominic Thiem (7:5, 6:1) in the first round of the tournament in Brisbane and overtook Czech tennis player Ivan Lendl in the number of ATP victories. The Spaniard has won 1069 matches on tour.

Nadal, 37, has been competing in the ATP since 2002.
