The 2024 season has just started and we already have the first final with the participation of a Russian tennis player. Our Andrey Rublev, the number one seed of the ATP tournament in Hong Kong, managed to pass the tournament round and reached the title match, in which his opponent will be the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.
Rublev arrived in Hong Kong as the 5th racket in the world. Andrei was released in the first round and in the next round of the competition the Russian confidently defeated the British Liam Broedy – 6:4, 7:6. The quarter-final and semi-final matches were much more difficult for the 26-year-old Rublev. At first, Andrei had to tinker with the Frenchman Arthur Fiss, but nevertheless in three sets our tennis player showed himself stronger (6:4, 1:6, 6:2). And on Saturday, the Russian must have become quite nervous during a confrontation with the 18-year-old Chinese Jiongcheng Shan, who played at the tournament as the 183rd racket in the world. The first match went to the Chinese (6:4), but then Rublev managed to turn the tide of the match in his favor – 6:2, 6:3.
Emil Ruusuvuori started the tournament in the first round. On the way to the final, the 24-year-old Finn eliminated two Russians at once: Karen Khachanov and Pavel Kotov. The first – in the second round (7:6, 2:6, 6:2) and the second – in the quarterfinals (6:3, 7:6). In the semifinals of the tournament, Ruusuvuori had to work hard to beat Austrian Sebastian Ofner in three sets (4:6, 7:5, 6:3). And Emil started this tournament with a victory over Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (6:7, 6:2, 6:1). It should be noted that during the tournament the Finn improved his position in the ATP ranking by 19 positions. Currently, Ruusuvuori is the 50th racket in the world, and if he wins the final, he will move up another five places.
Andrei and Emil crossed paths on the courts three times, each time during the second round matches. They met for the first time in 2021 at a tournament in Dubai. Then Rublev won with a score of 6:4, 6:4. At the beginning of last season, the Russian and the Finn played at the Australian Open. Success was also on Andrey’s side, but with a lost set – 6:2, 6:4, 6:7, 6:3. But at the Masters in Cincinnati six months ago, Emil managed to beat Rublev – 7:6, 5:7, 7:6.
