Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal announced that he would not be able to participate in the Australian Open due to an injury suffered during the tournament in Brisbane.
On Friday, 37-year-old Nadal lost to 29-year-old Australian Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Brisbane – 7:5, 6:7 (6:8), 3:6. This was the Spaniard’s first tournament after recovering from injury, due to which he missed almost all of 2023.
— During my last match in Brisbane, I was slightly injured. Once I arrived in Melbourne, I had an MRI which showed a microtear in the muscle, but not the muscle where the injury was.
At the moment, I am not ready to play at the maximum level in five-set matches. “I’m going back to Spain to see a doctor, get treatment and rest,” the Spaniard wrote on social media.
The Australian Open will take place from January 14 to 28.
Nadal won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2022.
