Rublev on winning early Australian Open: ‘I gave up mentally when I lost 1:4 in fifth set tiebreaker’

Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev said he was ready to lose late in the fifth set of his Australian Open first-round match against Brazilian Thiago Wilde.

Rublev, who received the fifth seed, defeated the 78th racket of the world Wild with a score of 7:5, 6:4, 3:6, 4:6, 7:6 (10:6). In the tiebreaker, the Russian lost 1:4 and 2:5. The Brazilian beat world number three Daniil Medvedev in five sets at the start of the French Open last year.

— Medvedev’s match with Wild crossed my mind. I thought about it in the fifth set, I will never forget this match. Wild is a great opponent.

I gave up mentally when I lost (in the tiebreaker) with a score of 1:4. Maybe that’s what helped me. I felt that today was not my day, but then I managed to make several good serves,” Rublev said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

In the next match, Rublev will face the winner of the confrontation between Christopher Eubanks (USA) and Taro Daniel (Japan).
