Medvedev enters the fray
The main event of the day for Russian tennis fans was the departure of the 3rd world racket, Daniil Medvedev. The Russian tennis player played in the 1st round with Frenchman Terence Atman, who occupies 152nd place in the world rankings.
Atman started strong by winning the first set with a score of 7:5. But after that, Daniil got involved, winning the next sets 6:2, 6:4. And in the fourth game, Atman threw the white flag, unable to continue the match.
We must give Daniil his due. After the match ended, the Russian supported the Frenchman and expressed confidence that he would succeed in the future.
“If you keep playing like this, all the best tournaments will be yours,” Daniil said.
Next, Medvedev will face Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori.
Karen Khachanov had a much more difficult start to the tournament. The Russian in the first round defeated the German Daniel Altmaier with a score of 5:7, 6:3, 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (7:3). Next, Karen will have a match with American Alexander Kovacevich. There it should be easier.
Tim and Murray didn’t survive the 1st round meat grinder
There are already heavy losses in the tournament. On January 15, several very famous players were eliminated from the Grand Slam tournament.
The Swiss Stan Wawrinka failed to complete the first round. He lost to Adrian Mannarino (France) in a thriller match with a score of 4:6, 6:3, 7:5, 3:6, 0:6.
Denis Shapovalov, representing Canada, unexpectedly lost in three sets to Czech qualifier Jakub Menšik (3:6, 5:7, 5:7).
Dominic Thiem and Andy Murray were also eliminated from the tournament. The Scottish tennis player lost to Argentinian Thomas Etcheverry in three sets. After the match, Murray hinted that he would retire from his career. Andy said he may never play the Australian Open again.
As for Tim, he fought to the end with the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime. But youth prevailed – 6:3, 7:5, 6:7 (5:7), 5:7, 6:3.
Potapova left the tournament following her husband
The day at the Australian Open was not very successful for Russian tennis players. Unexpectedly, Anastasia Potapova and Ekaterina Alexandrova left the tournament in the first round.
Potapova lost to world number 109 Kaia Juvan of Slovenia with a score of 1:6, 4:6. It is curious that earlier in the first round of the tournament Potapova’s husband, Alexander Shevchenko, was also eliminated. Maybe the guys didn’t have time to move on to tennis after the wedding. Hopefully things will go better in the future.
Alexandrova lost to German Laura Siegemund (world number 78) in her match. There was more fighting here – 2:6, 6:3, 6:7 (9:11).
The tournament turned out to be unexpected and unsuccessful for Veronika Kudermetova. The Russian world number 17 lost to world number 85 Victoria Golubic of Switzerland in three sets (6:7 (4:7), 6:1, 1:6). What happened is a mystery.
Mirra Andreeva reached the second round of the Australian Open for the first time
But it is worth being happy for young Russians. Mirra Andreeva did not have any particular problems in the match against the American Bernarda Pera (7:5, 6:2). The 16-year-old Russian reached the 2nd round of the Australian Open for the first time, and there a real test awaits her in the form of Tunisian Ons Jabeur.
Anastasia Zakharova also performed well. The 190th racket in the world beat Kazakh Yulia Putintseva with a score of 2:6, 6:0, 6:3. Superb game from a 21 year old tennis player!
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Anna Kalinskaya also entered the next stage. Pavlyuchenkova defeated Croatian Donna Vekic with a score of 6:4, 6:4. And Kalinskaya finally put the finishing touch on American Katie Volynets (6:3, 3:6, 6:2).
Among the remaining matches, we note the failed return of the Japanese Naomi Osaka to Australia. The former world number one lost to Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia with a score of 4:6, 6:7 (2:7).
