German tennis player Alexander Zverev does not believe he should resign from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Players’ Council over domestic violence allegations.
Previously, his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea filed a complaint against Zverev; the athlete is accused of physical violence and harm to his health. According to media reports, the 26-year-old tennis player will appear in court in May. In January, the ATP announced that Zverev had been elected to the organization’s player council for two years.
— Can I ask a question about the trial in Germany? Do you think it is appropriate to continue serving on the ATP Player Council while the case is pending?
– Why not?
— Are you sure that your fellow tennis players have retained their trust in you?
– I think yes. Nobody told me anything. I have no reason not to believe him.
“Some people say you shouldn’t speak at all, let alone take a leadership position.” What do you think?
“This is what journalists say, some of whom are more interested in writing about this story, they care more about clicks than the truth,” Zverev said at a press conference.
Zverev has reached the second round of the Australian Open, where he will face Slovakian Lukas Klein.
