Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic said he enjoyed hanging out next to a tree in a central Melbourne park during the Australian Open.
On Wednesday, Djokovic reached the third round of the Australian Open by defeating Australian Alexei Popyrin in four matches.
— Before the tournament started, you said that between matches you were going to the botanical garden. Locals told us that there is a special tree near the gardens that you like to visit to meditate. It’s true?
– It’s true. There is one tree in particular that I have developed a special relationship with over the past 15 years. I love every corner of the botanical gardens. I think it’s an incredible asset for Melbourne to have a park like this in the city centre.
I can’t say which tree, I’ll try to keep it a secret. I like chatting with an old friend.
—What attracts you to this tree?
– I contacted this tree. I just liked it. I loved its roots, its trunk, its branches and everything else. So I started climbing it many years ago. “I just have a connection,” Djokovic said at a news conference.
In the next round, the 36-year-old Serbian will face Argentinian Tomas Echeverri (30th seed).
Djokovic is a 10-time winner of the Australian Open.
