On the morning of Wednesday, January 17, the fifth racket in the world, Russian Andrei Rublev, 26, will play a match in the second round of the Australian Open. The opponent of our tennis player will be the 27-year-old American Christopher Eubanks, who before the start of the Grand Slam in Melbourne was 35th in the ATP rankings. Surprisingly, Rublev and Eubanks will meet for the first time at the professional level.
What do we know about Rublev’s opponent? Last season was the first full-fledged ATP tour for the American, since before that Eubanks scored the lion’s share of points at Challengers. And I must say that the transition to the elite division for Christopher turned out to be very successful. In 2023, he won his first title. At a tournament in Mallorca, Spain, the American representative defeated the famous Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the final (6:1, 6:4). Also last season, Eubanks reached the quarterfinals of tournaments three times. And he did it once at a Slam (Wimbledon). Unfortunately for Christopher, he lost twice to our Daniil Medvedev in the 1/4 finals. But if in Miami the Russian faced his opponent with confidence (6:3, 7:5), in London Medvedev needed five sets to break Eubanks’ resistance. Moreover, in the fourth match, Daniil was on the verge of losing the match, as he managed to gain the upper hand only in a tie-break – 6:4, 1:6, 4:6, 7: 6, 6:1.
In the first round match of the current Australian Open, Christopher Eubanks confidently defeated the Japanese Taro Daniel – 6:4, 6:2, 6:3. And before Melbourne, the American played in Auckland, where, however, he lost in the first round to the Dutchman Botik van de Zandshulp – 6:7, 2:6. However, in general, Eubanks’ game leaves a good impression and he will probably give Rublev a fight, just like last summer he managed to impose a fight on Medvedev.
Andrey started in Melbourne with a very difficult fight against the Brazilian Thiago Wilde. The Russian led in sets 2:0 (7:5, 6:4), but then allowed his opponent to return to the match – 3:6, 4:6. In the decisive match, it came down to the tiebreaker, which Rublev played at a higher level (10:6), winning a difficult victory in 3 hours and 42 minutes.
