Djokovic on altercation with fan during Australian Open match: ‘The man didn’t have the courage to say it to my face’

Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic said he invited a fan who shouted insults from the stands during the Australian Open second round match to say the same thing to his face, but the fan refused.

On Wednesday, Djokovic reached the third round of the Australian Open by defeating the Australian. Alexei Popyrin in four batches.

– What did this man tell you?

— Most likely, you don’t want to know (smiling). They told me a lot of things on the pitch, especially from that corner, and also from the same side in the other corner. I put up with him for most of the match. At one point I got tired of it, so I asked if he wanted to come down and tell me to my face.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have the courage. That’s exactly what I asked him. If you have courage, if you’re tough, come tell me to my face, let’s talk about it. He apologized from afar. That’s all.

“You looked inspired after that moment.”

– Yes, perhaps it was necessary. Look, I don’t want to put myself in situations like that. “Maybe it was necessary so that I could shake myself up a little and start showing on the court the intensity that I needed throughout the match,” Djokovic said at a press conference.

In the next round, the 36-year-old Serbian will face Argentinian Tomas Echeverri (30th seed).
