Tsurenko: We, Ukrainians, being in new realities, have learned to enjoy the smallest things and not pay attention to moments that previously seemed important

The third racket of Ukraine, according to her, simply enjoys the process

The third racket of Ukraine Lesya Tsurenko commented on her victory in the second round Australian Open 2024and also shared her thoughts on career reassurance and her motivation to continue performing at the highest level.

“Today I was really more stable and calm. A very unpleasant opponent in fact, because she serves and hits very powerfully, so there was almost no rhythm. And my task was to return the balls to her as much as possible, to make her move. There are some questions about fairly simple mistakes, but perhaps this is also caused by the fact that the opponent hits very flatly and hits hard. Overall, I’m very happy with the win and happy that I was able to execute my game plan.”

“None of us are getting any younger, I understand everything perfectly. I enjoy tennis, I enjoy being here, I am learning a lot of new things. Tennis, even at the advanced age I am, is such a fun and educational process for me that I continue.”

“To be honest, a couple of years ago I really thought about ending my career, you remember that I had big problems with my elbow, so you can say that those people were right to some extent. Now, as much as I can, I look at life with a positive attitude. Probably all of us, Ukrainians, being in new realities, have learned to enjoy the smallest things and not pay attention to moments that previously seemed important, such as a tennis match. Now I’m much more relaxed about matches, I just play tennis and enjoy what I can.”

Let us remind you that on the morning of January 17 (Kyiv time) Tsurenko beat Rebecca Masarova in two sets and made it to the third round of the Australian Open for the second time since 2013. There she will fight with world number two Aryna Sabalenka.

In addition to Lesya, Elina Svitolina, Dayana Yastremskaya and Marta Kostyuk continue to compete in singles at the Australian Open.

In the latest edition of the WTA rankings, 34-year-old Tsurenko lost one position and ranks 33rd.
