Former world number one, Spaniard Arantha Sanchez Vicario, was given a two-year suspended prison sentence in a fraud case, reports Reuters citing a Barcelona court.
Sánchez Vicario, her ex-husband Josep Santacana and three others were found guilty of hiding assets to avoid paying a 7.6 million euro debt to a Luxembourg bank.
The couple, who divorced in 2019, reportedly denied all allegations. Santacana was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. Sanchez Vicario blamed her ex-husband, saying he managed her money and she was unaware of the illegal asset manipulation. The couple was ordered to pay compensation to the bank in the amount of 6.6 million.
It should be noted that the probationary period for the 52-year-old Spaniard will be two years.
Sánchez Vicario was ranked number one in the world in both singles and doubles, with 14 Grand Slam titles to her name, as well as two silver medals and two Olympic bronzes.
