Russian tennis player Maria Timofeeva said she was under a lot of pressure and prayed to God during match points in her Australian Open third-round match against Brazilian Beatrice Haddad-Mahi.
On Friday, Timofeeva, a debutant in the main draw of Grand Slam tournaments, defeated Haddad-Maya with a score of 7:6 (9:7), 6:3. The Russian converted the match point on the fifth attempt.
“It’s like a fairy tale, but with the support of this incredible audience, I feel like anything is possible.” I’m really grateful to them for coming and supporting me, it really means a lot. I’m enjoying every second of it.
The pressure on match points was very high and Béatrice played with a lot of confidence. I prayed to the god of tennis to help me.
Since I have arrived at the main draw, why not stay here longer to enjoy the tournament. I think that’s the only motivation,” Timofeeva said in a post-match interview on the field.
In the next round, Timofeeva will play with Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine.
