Athletistic / Tennis. Russian tennis player Anna Kalinskaya (75th racket in the world) qualified for the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open on January 20. After the third round match of the Grand Slam tournament, fans celebrated brightly its entry into the second week of the Melbourne tournament.
At the end of Kalinskaya’s match with American Sloane Stephens, fans in the stands sang “Kalinka-Malinka”, dedicating the song to the Russian tennis player. Note that Russian and Belarusian tennis players have been participating in Grand Slam tournaments in neutral status since March 2022.
Kalinskaya defeated Stevens in the third round of AO-2024 in three sets with a score of 6:7 (8-10), 6:1, 6:4. Their meeting lasted 2 hours 45 minutes. Note that in 2017, Sloan became the winner of the US Open.
Anna Kalinskaya’s next opponent at the Australian Open will be the Italian Yasmine Paolini (31st racket on the planet).
“Kalinka” (named after the viburnum plant; also known as “Kalinka-Malinka”) is a Russian song written by Ivan Larionov in a folk style. Sometimes mistakenly considered a folk song. Also called “Kalinka”, it is a folk dance performed to the melody of this song.
