Dayana managed to win, despite the pain, and thanks to the support of the public
Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremskaya commented on the historic victory over the American for her career Emma Navarro in the third round Australian Open 2024.
“I had a lot of support in the first round match, and today there was even more support. Thanks everybody. My best result in this tournament was the third round, and today it was not easy, I was a little nervous about it.”
“In the second set, I felt pain in my neck, I needed to stretch it, but I was afraid to do it myself. My focus shifted to that, but overall I thought it was a great match. Of course, I could have played much better, but I am grateful for this day, this match and the atmosphere.”
“What did I tell myself before the decisive set? To be honest, I didn’t concentrate too much on my neck because it took my attention away from the match. I told myself to just have fun. People supported me, so just get the energy, give it back, relax and play.”
On the night of January 20 (Kyiv time), Yastremskaya interrupted Navarro’s winning streak and reached the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open for the first time in her career. At the Grand Slam level, she repeated her best result from 2019 (Wimbledon).
Earlier, Marta Kostyuk made it to the fourth round of AO-2024, also for the first time in her career. Elina Svitolina will play her 1/16 final match against Swiss Victoria Golubic today, tentative start is 12:00.
In the 1/8 finals, Dayana will face the 18th racket of the tournament, Victoria Azarenka.
