Svitolina: I’m glad that I won in two sets and showed good tennis

Elina experiences incredible emotions from the fact that she managed to return to the top level so quickly

The first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina shared her emotions after reaching the fourth round Australian Open 2024and also talked about her family and return to tennis.

“It was a great match on my part. I was excited to play for the first time in the evening session at this year’s tournament. The guys in front of us played quickly. I was a little worried that I would have to play at night. I’m very happy that I won in two sets and also that I showed good tennis.”

“In the fourth round will I play against Noskova? Well, of course, defeat Iga [Швентек] at a major is a great achievement. I am sure that our match will be a tough fight. I remember that at the beginning of my comeback, both she and I played in the same ITF tournament in Portugal. And now we are here, in the fourth circle. I’m looking forward to this meeting.”

“Like we are now with Gael [Монфисом] Do we share the responsibilities of caring for our daughter? Well, I’m still playing in the tournament, so it’s his turn to take care of her. It’s a pleasure to be here with the whole family. It is impossible to imagine a better place for a daughter than Melbourne, New Zealand, with all these parks and long walks with her grandmother. Yes, it’s nice to be all together.”

“What does it mean to have that kind of support from a team and a family? Of course this is of great importance. To be honest, I didn’t expect great results to come so quickly after returning. It’s incredible that I was able to come back and play good tennis and compete in such great tournaments. These are special emotions for me, I really missed it, so now I’m enjoying every moment.”

Let us remind you that today Svitolina beat Victoria Golubic (6:2, 6:3) from Switzerland in two sets, thanks to which she advanced to the 1/8 finals after Marta Kostyuk and Dayana Yastremska. At the same time, Elina contributed to a new achievement: for the first time, three Ukrainian women were in the fourth round of a Grand Slam level tournament.

The strongest tennis player in Ukraine recently took a break from her career: in October 2022, her daughter Sky was born. Already in April she returned to action, a month later she won her 17th WTA trophy. Then she had the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and the semifinals of Wimbledon. Elina is currently ranked 23rd in the WTA rankings.

In the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open, Svitolina will face 19-year-old Czech Linda Noskova, who sensationally knocked out world number one Iga Sventek from the tournament.
