Athletistic/Tennis. The Russian Mirra Andreeva, 16, sheathed her racket following the results of the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open.
Andreeva failed to advance to the quarterfinals. She lost to the 2021 Roland-Garros champion, 11th racket in the world, the Czech Barbora Krejcikova.
Here’s what Andreeva said after the match:
“Difficult match. She played excellent tennis. I had a little difficulty at the beginning and during the match. It’s normal, it happens. It’s tennis. But you have to give her credit, she showed an incredible level of play. I wish him good luck until the very end of the tournament.
I put a bit of pressure on myself before the match because I felt like I had an advantage. I’ve already beaten her twice. It’s the 1/8 finals, for the first time I can reach the quarter-finals.
After winning the first set, I thought it was almost over. But the first set does not mean winning the match. This happened to me several times last year. We must learn a lesson from this. I will try to draw conclusions from this match. Maybe not today, but tomorrow. I’ll just try to play better in the next match.
I think overall I had a good tournament. For the second time in my life, I played the fourth round. I hope it won’t be the last (smile). There are many positive things to take away from this trip. The previous match was great. I beat my idol here. There is a lot of positivity both in the tournament and in this match. I can’t wait to come back here next year.
Playing at any Grand Slam is special, but so is Melbourne. This is my third time here, but it’s the second time I’ve played on these courts. It was the first time I played on these big fields. Much good can come from this. I really like Melbourne, I like the atmosphere, I like playing on these courts. I hope next year I can come back and play in front of these incredible stands again. Today, many people supported me. Sorry to have disappointed you a little. I am sure that in the next match here I will try to show my best level and please you (smiles).
The next tournaments will be Doha and Dubai. I will try to play in all the major tournaments. I can’t play them all, but I’ve chosen the ones I really want to go to. The next tournament is Doha. I can’t wait to go there, to play there for the first time,” Andreeva said at a press conference.
Here’s how Czech tennis fans rated the match between Andreeva and Krejcikova on social media:
Petr Mlynar:
– Honestly, I didn’t expect Barbora to win. Mirra was too good in previous matches.
Romain Dohnal:
– Just look at the bookmaker’s odds, the Russian was the favorite. I didn’t believe in Krejcikova either, but it’s great that she managed to win.
Miroslav Vala:
– I didn’t care who won – Krejcikov or Andreev. Both are excellent athletes.
Petr Jelinek:
– Congratulations to Krejcikova. I think there was a less complex grid. Mirra spent a lot of energy on his former rivals.
Vladimir Palan:
– Wow! Did you manage to break the Russian sensation?! I’m shocked.
Milan Kalash:
– It was not easy for Barbora, as the Australians furiously supported the Russians. But she still managed to win!
Marian Bžoch:
– The 16-year-old Russian supertalent was defeated. Well done!
Joseph Zhirovsky:
– The audience clearly sympathized with the Russian. At least somewhere they don’t mix politics and sports.
Petr Jelinek:
– Josef Jirovský, you are the only one who writes about this. Who cares where it comes from?
Miroslav Cherny:
– Great, I hope Barbora will advance even more, even if next time it will be difficult… against Arina… I wish Mirra good luck. She will show up more than once.
Zdenek Samek:
– Krejcikova should not have had problems with the child.
Petr Hluboka:
– I didn’t believe in Barbora. It makes victory even sweeter.
Radek Důbravny:
– Congratulations to ours. There are surprisingly few anti-Russian comments from local idiots in tennis news. This makes me happy.
Jan Jirsa:
– Krejcikova defeated an incredibly talented opponent. For me, Andreeva is the future number 1.
Krejcikova’s next opponent at the Australian Open 2024 will be Belarus’ representative Arina Sabalenka.
