Last year’s triumphant Melbourne did not lose a single set at this tournament
World number two Arina Sabalenko defeated the American Coco Gauff and reached the final of the Australian Open 2024.
Sabalenka, performing without the attributes of nationality, needed two sets and an hour and 44 minutes to triumph.
During the first game, 19-year-old Gauff was losing 2:5, but was able to take four games in a row. With the score 6:5, she served for the set, but could not achieve what she wanted. The tiebreak brought a convincing victory to the “neutral” tennis player – 7:2.
The second set proceeded in an equal fight until Arina managed to make a break point in the ninth game. This factor became decisive: Sabalenka then converted the match point on her second attempt and advanced to her second consecutive Melbourne final. Let us remember that Sabalenka is the current winner of the Australian Open. And at the current tournament, she won all her victories in two sets.
Today the second finalist in the women’s singles AO-2024 will be determined. The Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who started the tournament from the qualifying stage, and the Chinese Qin Wen Zheng, world No. 15, are competing for their debut final.
