This tournament still became historic and record-breaking for Diana
Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremskaya could not overcome the barrier in the face of a Chinese woman Qin Wen Zheng on the way to the singles final Australian Open 2024.
Dayana lost in two sets with the same score 4:6. The semifinal match lasted one hour and 37 minutes.
Note that in the first set the Ukrainian led 2:0 and was one step away from the score 3:0, but missed this opportunity. Later, she had to take a medical time-out – it is possible that muscle problems were the decisive reason for Yastremskaya’s defeat. Just numbers: Dayana spent more than 15 hours on the court during the AO 2024 – about four hours more than her opponent from China.
Later, Zheng looked a little more confident and accurate, managed to break someone else’s serve at the decisive moment and celebrated the final triumph. In the final of the major, Qin Wen will fight with the current champion Aryna Sabalenka, who previously turned out to be stronger than Coco Gauff.
The tournament became extremely successful and historic for Dayana. For the first time in her career, she reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam competition. What is especially valuable is that Dayana started in the qualifications, where she won all three victories (over Lea Boskovic, Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Maya Joynt) in three sets.
Yastremskaya consistently eliminated Marketa Vondrousova, Varvara Gracheva, Emma Navarro, Victoria Azarenka and Linda Noskova from the main draw of the Melbourne Major.
Let us remind you that Marta Kostyuk finished her performances at the quarterfinal stage (also a personal best). The first racket of Ukraine, Elina Svitolina, stopped a round earlier – in her case, an injury prevented her.
