Djokovic beat Taylor Fritz in four sets in a tough quarterfinal. After recovering two set points with a score of 5:6, the Serb moved the first set to a tiebreaker and confidently won it 7:3.
Fritz took advantage of an early break in the second set, fended off several break points during the match and restored parity. However, the Serb raised the level of his game in the third and fourth sets, losing only 5 games in two matches and winning with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Novak reached his 11th Australian Open semi-final.
The Serb previously needed four sets to beat Dino Prizmic and Alexey Popyrin in the first two rounds before defeating Thomas Martin Echeverri and Adrian Mannarino in three games.
The 10-time Australian Open champion is now 94-8 in the tournament and is on a 33-match winning streak. The last defeat dates back to 2018, when the Serb lost to Hyun Chong in the fourth round.
Sinner defeated Andrey Rublev in a three-set match in the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old won the first set 6-4, then in the second game of the tie-break he lost 1-5, but then won 6 points in a row, led 2-0 and finally beat the Russian. Sinner lost only three games in the third set to reach the semifinals.
Before that, the Italian had effortlessly defeated Botik van de Zandshulp, Jesper de Jong, Sebastian Baez and Karen Khachanov. This is his first career semi-final at the Australian Open.
Djokovic has won four of his six fights with Sinner.
They are 2-2 in 2023, with Djokovic winning the Wimbledon semifinal and the final of the ATP Finals and Sinner winning the group stage of the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup.
