Lyudmila Kichenok, along with ethnic Ukrainian Alena Ostapenko, will win the prestigious trophy.
Lyudmila Kichenok reached the doubles final at the Australian Open. The Ukrainian tennis player and her partner Alena Ostapenko from Latvia defeated the tandem Gabriela Dabrowski (Canada)/Erin Routliffe (New Zealand) in two sets.
Let’s note that it is very difficult for our compatriots to win the fourth seeds in the tournament. In two games, the Ukrainian-Latvian tandem lost 3:5, but twice managed to win four games in a row. In the Australian Open 2024 final, Kichenok and Ostapenko will play against Taiwan’s Xie Shuwei and Belgian Elise Mertens.
Let’s add that Lyudmila and Alena will play for the first time in the decisive doubles match of the Grand Slam series tournament. And for Ukraine, this is the second time in history that a representative of our state will play in the final of the Australian Open doubles tournament. In 2008, the Bondarenko brothers won the title in Melbourne.
