German tennis player Alexander Zverev declared himself disappointed by the defeat against the Russians Daniel Medvedev in the semifinals of the Australian Open, and also said he had a fever after his quarterfinal match.
Zverev lost to Medvedev in five games in the semifinals, leading 2-0 in sets. The meeting lasted almost 4.5 hours.
— You were two points away from reaching the final. What were you thinking during the match?
— I played pretty well in this tournament. I have been playing good tennis for several months now, so I am extremely disappointed with the result. I can’t say anything special anymore.
— When did you feel that the course of the match was starting to change?
— At the end of the second set, I started to lose energy. I didn’t feel as fresh anymore.
I was a little sick after beating Carlos Alcaraz. I had a fever and spending a lot of time on the court didn’t help me recover, so I had a little loss of energy at the end of the second set. It is impossible to play against Medvedev if you are not 100% physically ready. Daniil doesn’t give you anything, he forces you to work as hard as possible. Obviously, I was very close to winning the third and fourth sets, but I was no longer the same player as at the start of the match. I just held on. I didn’t lose serve, but I felt like I was superior in the first two sets, but that disappeared in the third.
It’s a bad loss, but what bothers me the most is that I didn’t feel 100% physically. This ruined my chance to win. I missed it because of my physical condition, not because of my tennis level. It’s a disappointment for me. This probably happened for the first time in his career. “At the same time, I can be proud of myself, because I did everything I could,” Zverev said at a press conference.
Medvedev reached the final of the Australian Open for the third time in his career, where he will play alongside Italian Jannik Sinner (4). The Russian has already made the finals of the tournament in 2021 and 2022, but lost both times.
