Belarusian tennis player Arina Sabalenko said she wants to confirm her level and win another Grand Slam tournament after winning the 2023 Australian Open.
On Saturday, world number two Sabalenka defended her title at the Australian Open. In the final, she defeated 12th seed Zheng Qingwen of China with a score of 6:3, 6:2. The match lasted 1 hour 16 minutes. On the way to the trophy, the Belarusian tennis player did not lose a single set during the tournament. For 25-year-old Sabalenka, this is the second victory in Grand Slam tournaments.
“Right now, I just have no words.” I don’t know how to describe my emotions. But I am definitely very happy and proud of everything I have achieved so far. I’m just happy with the level I played at today. Zheng Qingwen is an excellent player and a very strong opponent. I am very happy to have been able to achieve this victory today.
— Your image on and off the field seems completely different.
– Actually, it’s good that I’m two different people on and off the field, because if I were the same person in life and on the field, I think I wouldn’t have my team and I would be left alone (smiles). It took me so long to become who I am today on the field, to learn to control myself and understand myself better. Yes, it’s been a long journey.
— Was it important for you to win the second Grand Slam tournament to show that last year it was not an isolated incident?
– Yes, in general, I had in mind that I didn’t want to be that tennis player who won a tournament and then disappeared. “I wanted to show that I can constantly stay at my level and win another tournament,” Sabalenka said at a press conference.
