Medvedev won his 10th victory against a top 10 player at Grand Slam tournaments
Daniil Medvedev’s victory over Alexander Zverev, currently ranked sixth in the ATP rankings, was his 10th victory over a top 10 player at a Grand Slam stage.
The Russian’s first victory against a top 10 player came at Wimbledon 2017, where he defeated world number three Stan Wawrinka in four sets. Since then, he has beaten Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Carlos Alcaraz.

Only three other players have managed to win the semi-finals of the Australian Open, after losing the first two sets.
Kevin Curran did it against Ben Testerman in 1984, Arnaud Clément beat Sébastien Grosjean in 2001 and Marcos Baghdatis beat David Nalbandian in 2006.
Medvedev is the leader in the number of hard court finals since 2019
All of Medvedev’s finals are played hard. The first final took place at the US Open in 2019 and since then he has participated 5 more times. The only title so far came at the 2021 US Open.
No one has had more hard court finals since 2019, even Djokovic only had 5, but Novak missed the Australian Open and US Open in 2022 due to his reluctance to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Medvedev’s opponent in the Australian Open final is Jannik Sinner, who eliminated Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and has already had the best tournament of his career. He also noted a number of achievements.
Sinner ends Djokovic’s winning streak dating back to 2019
Djokovic did not lose at Australian TBS for 5 years and won 33 matches in a row until he was eliminated in the semi-finals by Sinner. The streak lasted for 2195 days and before that he lost to Korean Chung Hyun in 2018. Interestingly, in July 2023, Carlos Alcaraz broke the same Serbian winning streak of 2195 days at Wimbledon.
Sinner is the first Italian player to reach the Australian Open singles final

Sinner’s compatriot Matteo Berrettini came close to reaching the final of the Australian Open a few years ago, but failed to defeat future champion Rafael Nadal. The Italian lost in four sets with a score of 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6.
If we take all the TBS, the Italians have won Roland Garros three times: Nicole Pietrangeli in 1959 and 1960, and Adriano Panatte in 1976.
Sinner is the youngest Australian Open men’s singles finalist since Novak Djokovic in 2008.

Sinner is just behind Rafael Nadal in wins in his first six matches against world No. 1s.
Jannik Sinner has won four of his first six matches against the ATP’s top players. in this indicator, the Italian is second only to Nadal, who won his first five matches against the world’s first rackets.

Sinner’s two losses also came to Novak.
Sinner is the first Italian to defeat the world number one at a Grand Slam tournament
Jannik Sinner also became the first Italian player to defeat a world number one at a Grand Slam tournament.
Before the semi-final between Sinner and Djokovic, Italian tennis players had a record of 0-23 against the world’s top rackets. These statistics have been calculated since 1973, when electronic rankings were first introduced in tennis.
It is worth noting that Sinner had never faced a world number 1 in a Grand Slam tournament before the semi-finals of the 2024 Australian Open.
