Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev said he felt very tired after four five-set matches at the Australian Open, which was held in Melbourne.
In the final of the Australian Open, Italian Jannik Sinner beat Medvedev (3) with a score of 3:6, 3:6, 6:4, 6:4, 6:3. The athletes spent 3 hours 44 minutes on the field. The Russian has already played matches in five sets in the second round with the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, in the quarter-finals with the Pole Hubert Hurkacz and in the semi-final with the German Alexander Zverev.
— You played four matches in five sets during the tournament. Can you tell us how this affects your body and are you ready to run a marathon tomorrow?
– No no. I’m not ready to do anything tomorrow. I fly away and I don’t like to fly. I don’t know if it’s the cabin pressure, the position we’re sitting in or something else, but my body doesn’t like it. The way I feel right now, I’ll be dead a week after the flight.
Five sets is hard on the body. In fact, I’d say it’s crazy. I felt the worst the day after the matches with Hurkac and Zverev. Yesterday, when I was in training, I said to myself: “Damn, how am I going to play in the final, how am I going to move? We worked really hard with the physical therapist, he did a great job of making sure I was ready every time I stepped on the field.
During matches, it was the same story every time: after two sets, my energy level dropped because I wasn’t getting ideal sleep. So let’s say it’s my fault because I should have won matches faster, but sometimes it’s hard.
It’s hard on my body, but at least I feel like I’m not hurting myself. A few calluses, which are very rare for me, but they will pass anyway. I’m ready for the next step this season. However, I started the season strong.
When you have a good sporting mentality, it’s very difficult to lose in the final. That probably hurts more than losing in the semi-final or quarter-final. But we have to try to find the good and the positive in the fact that the final is better than the semi-finals and quarter-finals,” Medvedev said at a press conference.
Medvedev lost in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time in his career, the third time at the Australian Open.
