Daniil Medvedev: “Support after defeats is good. I will try to win the next Grand Slam tournament.”

Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev after the defeat against the Italians Jannik sinner during the Australian Open final, he declared that he would try to win the next Grand Slam tournament.

On Sunday, Medvedev lost to Sinner 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 3-6 in the final of the Australian Open after leading 2-0 in sets. Two years ago, the Russian lost to Spaniard Rafael Nadal in Melbourne, also winning the first two sets. In total, Medvedev has lost five times in the finals of Grand Slam tournaments and won one victory: against Serbian Novak Djokovic at the 2021 US Open.

—I think sympathy is always nice. I didn’t have time to respond, but I really have a lot of friends, some write to me after each match.

You read these messages and it’s a good feeling after a tough defeat. In Russia they say… I forgot. It’s better to have three really good friends than a hundred people who will be there when you win or lose, they don’t care.

I think I follow this advice very well. I try to make sure that there are people around me that I trust and that they can trust me. And a few others… I don’t want everyone to like me. It’s impossible.

Empathy is awesome. That’s why I felt very bad after losing to Rafa. I don’t know how I will feel in a week or a month. But after losing to Rafa I had my worst season, I don’t know if that was the reason or not. I don’t know what will happen next, but I will try to maintain the mindset that should help me win the next Grand Slam. There will be several more tournaments before that. If I participate, it’s for victory. Otherwise, I would have stayed home with my family.

— Two years ago, after the final, you made some rather gloomy statements, but today you seem much more positive. Is it because the match went differently and you feel the match differently, or because it’s just a different Daniil?

– I am different. When I gave my speech, I also tried to change myself and think less about others and more about myself, because this is a very important way to feel good and achieve your dreams.

I did not succeed. Subsequently, I managed to reach this state. I was able to become a different person, with a different mentality. “I will really try to do everything possible so that this defeat does not affect my performance in other tournaments, because that is part of the sport,” Medvedev told a news conference.
