Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev defeats five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova by the amount of prizes won during his career.
On Sunday, world number three Medvedev lost to Italian Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open with a score of 6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 4:6, 3:6. The Russian earned $1.1 million for reaching the tournament final; his career earnings now stand at over $39 million.
Sharapova, who retired in 2020, earned approximately $38,770,000, according to WTA data.
Medvedev lost in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time in his career, the third time at the Australian Open. In 2021, the 27-year-old Russian won the US Open. Sharapova has five victories in ten Grand Slam finals.
